Tongkat ali or Eurycoma longifolia is a widely popular herbal extract for male sexual potency and health. It is traditionally celebrated for these uses, dating back centuries. It is useful not just for its aphrodisiac effects, but also for other health actions such as anti-malaria and anti-bacterial. The roots, bark, and leaves of tongkat ali are also used for these purposes, and they are also studied by scientists for their beneficial components.
Tongkat ali contains unique compounds that have specific actions in your body. It has both known and unknown constituents, including compounds such as eurycomaoside, eurycolactone, and eurycomanone. The herb is considered beneficial to male enhancement through different ways, such as in a 2010 study when its extracts was found to improve all aspects of semen quality and assisted in spontaneous pregnancies.
In separate studies, tongkat ali was seen to increase sexual performance. The same benefit was exhibited in the results of another research performed on sluggish male rats, where the subjects’ serum testosterone levels increased and had lower rates of latent ejaculation. Other projected benefits of tongkat ali, as shown in different studies, are the following:
- Potential in fighting off malaria and bacterial infections – A study looked at the various extract forms of tongkat ali, all tested for their effectiveness against gram-positive and negative bacteria. They were also tested against the Staphylococcus aureus. Results show that alcoholic and acetone extracts from the leaves and stems actively fought the bacteria, except E. coli and Salmonella typhi.
- Found to help enhance your body’s adoptive response to exercise – The extract was used in conjunction with a weight training program by a 2003 study, which found that it increased lean body mass and led to a loss of fat tissue relative to placebo. This tongkat ali benefit has been known among athletes and bodybuilders, particularly called an ergogenic benefit. The good news is that the herb is relatively affordable.
Just like when using other herbal supplements, there are safety considerations when using tongkat ali. While showing no particular toxicity or contraindication, the herb may have stimulant effects, meaning the potential side effects may include insomnia, anxiety, and increased heart rate. Take caution in using it if you have a heart condition or hypertension. Listen to your body’s response when you are under herbal therapy. Know, too, that tongkat ali is added in many male enhancement formulas.
